i'm looking for suggestions for restaurants that are not too far to drive to from downtown (or that don't require driving). they can't be too pricey, but i'd like the food to be somewhat memorable (duh). so, just to give you an idea, i'm considering the "green zebra" (i'm not a vegetarian, but i've been meaning to go there anyway) and i also liked "japonais," although since i've already been to this one, i'd rather try something different.

thanks in advance for sharing your recommendations.

There are a couple good options in the same neighborhood as the Green Zebra. One of my favorites is West Town Tavern (http://westtowntavern.com/) - get the zinfandel-braised pot roast, or whatever the fish special is.

Mexique is almost right across the street from Green Zebra, and will definitely fit the bill for something different (http://mexiquechicago.com/) - everything I've had there has been excellent.

If you're coming from downtown, you'll probably have to take two busses to get there, but Terragusto (http://terragustocafe.com/) has amazing Italian food, and also has the benefit of being BYOB. It's also not that far of a drive - just head north on Ashland and take a left on Addison and you're right there.

Green Zebra is also a great option. If you've already been to Japonais, skip it and try someplace new.

we just went to bandera, which is downtown on michigan avenue (sorry, don't have the address handy). it is a little pricey but there are some non-pricey items on the menu as well. i had a prime rib french dip which was amazing, and another person w/ us had bbq salmon.

also, i have heard great things about the restaurant flo. it's at 1434 w. chicago and from what i have heard is really reasonably priced and has some awesome and unique mexican cuisine. eatflo.com

Flo is really good. Better for brunch than dinner, but still good for dinner, and very reasonably priced.
